The coldest Gasparilla Pirate Festival in the 122-year history of the Tampa event still supplied the fun. Here are Sunshine State Tourism's biggest takeaways from the weekend in Tampa.

Cold temps didn't dampen the festive spirit – or outfits – at the Gasparilla Festival.

The juice cocktails mixed in milk jugs appear to be a necessity

Everywhere you looked, people hauled around milk jugs filled with their own secret concoction. Mental note has been made to join the jug-toters in 2027, although several were kind enough to share (that's also kinda frightening and probably a little too trusting).

Get a hotel on the Riverwalk

Easier said than done, and not cheap, but it makes all the difference in the world. There are plenty of options but we were at the Tampa Hotel Riverwalk and the setup was perfect. The parade route is out the front door, and the Riverwalk (and quick path to watch the invasion) is out the backdoor.

Plus, the hotel offers a DJ, great views and an outdoor, poolside bar. The best party is basically right outside your door, front or back.

You can't go too early to secure a spot for the invasion

This is a little more difficult when it's freezing, but we strolled down the Riverwalk two hours prior to the invasion near the convention center and we couldn't get close. Probably should have made it four hours ahead of the ship's arrival.

Plus, it's not like you'll be bored with boaters throwing ducks (rubber ones, not real ones), beads and, yes, even jello shots (again, trusting strangers seems to be acceptable at this event) to the crowd from the water.

And if you have your juice jug, you won't be thirsty while you wait.

Check out Harpoon Harry's

Face it, everywhere in downtown Tampa is going to be nuts in terms of crowds during Gasparilla. And while Hattricks Tavern and American Social are our favorite stops in downtown Tampa, we came away from the weekend thoroughly impressed with Harpoon Harry's.

The staff provided surprisingly excellent service – especially from the fun and upbeat bartenders – despite the massive crowds. Food and drinks were arriving quickly, and never disappointed.

Harpoon Harry's might not get the same fanfare as other downtown staples, but it received a big thumbs up during several stops over the weekend.

People are extremely friendly; make sure to be the same

It's difficult to cram hundreds of thousands of people into an event together and the level of friendliness to be as high as what we experienced. That's the final takeaway and was very evident all weekend.

These pirates were feeling extremely festive and kept the good vibes going everywhere. It was refreshing to see.
